"My husband, Tom, has been my greatest inspiration for teaching. He was a Professor of English his entire career before retiring, winning teaching awards and the accolades of students and colleagues. He never aspired to college administration because he loved the classroom so much. After seeing our youngest daughter struggle with middle school and early high school because she felt coursework was not interesting or challenging enough, I decided that I wanted to teach to create an atmosphere that would encourage students to not just move mechanically through the process of learning, but to enjoy it as well. I moved from pharmaceutical and medical equipment sales to teaching at Berkmar High School in Lilburn and then to Lakeview Academy in Gainesville. I thought I would have to adjust my teaching methods, going from a school of 3,300 to a high school of 180, but I found that kids are kids – they have the same needs, wants, desires, difficulties, and learning capabilities despite where they go to school and the kind of homes in which they’re reared. And I found that I love teaching and helping students find themselves in what they read. I’ve also taught First Year Composition at the University of Georgia where one of my students won one of three Barnett Essay Awards for the 2009-2010 school year for her paper in English 1102M, the multicultural version of 1102.

Tom and I have lived a year in a small fishing village in the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica and a year in the medieval village of San Gemini in the Umbrian province of Italy, teaching and tutoring students and adults in English and basking in each country’s culture and people. I hope to bring some of these rich experiences to my teaching at such a creative and innovative school as  William and Reed. We have four children and six grandchildren, two of whom are here in the Atlanta area, two in Ohio, and two in Maryland."
